“The more you earn, the less you learn to relaxez-vous.” A lyric from a silly Dean Martin song that’s been on my mind lately as I’ve been swinging like a pendulum in this tough balancing act between accomplishing my goals and just taking a minute to take a deep breath and relax. Life in general makes this hard, but add ”freelance artist” into the mix and you’re sure to be met with a constant barrage of pressing needs – you’re all you’ve got in terms of employees, which means everything – from social media, marketing, to bottom-line-balancing, not to mention just taking the time to work on your craft, getting and staying inspired – which are just as essential for an artist as any other part of the job – is down to you. Your mind is a constant breeding ground for more ideas, more products, great pieces you want to create – turning off the “to-do” list constantly growing in your head really has to be a choice. Put down the pen, close the tabs in your browser – your Twitter and Instagram followers can wait until morning. Sometimes you have to take a minute and take ol’ Dean’s advice, “relax, relax, relax, relaxez-vous.”
